Ayesha Curry shares 8 essentials for designing your outdoor space
A D presents the Smart guest edit, a shopping series in which our favorite design enthusiasts share the products and collectibles that bring their interiors to life. This week’s special guest is Ayesha Curry, cookbook author, TV host and entrepreneur. Get exclusive on what’s high on her wishlist here, and don’t forget to subscribe to the Clever newsletter to receive these choices straight to your inbox each month.
When it comes to dining and entertainment, Ayesha Curry makes not to play games. Mother of three children and wife of an NBA player, she masters the art of time management. In case you haven’t kept up with her every move, Ayesha’s jobs include bestselling cookbook author, cookware designer, restaurant owner, and Food Network host. In April, she opened the doors of her new business, Sweet July, a one-stop-shop in Oakland, California for all things living space. This month Ayesha really shows off her skills in the Food issue of Sweet July Magazine, which will be on newsstands on October 20.
It’s no surprise that her tastefully decorated home in the Bay Area is an absolute oasis, and we had to figure out how to replicate Ayesha’s modern aesthetic for ourselves. Fortunately, she obliged us and invited us to share in the spirit of welcoming a new season. “Even though I feel like the summer has passed without ceremony, I’m excited to jump into my favorite time of year to throw outdoor parties,” said Ayesha. “Fall produce is my favorite for cooking, and the weather is generally pleasant for both late afternoon and evening gatherings.”
Honestly, we couldn’t agree more and are more than a little envious of Ayesha’s California weather in late fall! Here she tells us about eight of the products she will be using throughout the season to “outfit my outdoor space for all the delicious celebrations to come”.
“For me, a dinner usually starts with a good cocktail. To make my life easier, I like to make a jackpot in a nice pitcher, and let the guests help themselves. I love Sweet July’s Lakeshore set in this gorgeous amber color, which is so perfectly fally, but also easy and effortless.
“I like a good extendable table. For small gatherings, you can keep things intimate and expand to accommodate more guests for larger parties. Comfortable seating is also a must, so I love these hand woven chairs that look super chic and modern.
“String lights never fail to set a mood, and I usually lean towards lights that are a bit modern.”
“I love a kitchen container that can be used as a serving dish, so these pre-seasoned casts are in heavy rotation around my house. They’re great for protein like chicken or steak, but they’re also great for family desserts like a delicious apple crumble or pan-fried bread pudding.
“When it comes to table decoration, I like to keep it very simple. I usually skip the flowers and go for simple, natural vases with branches or some greenery that I will take from my garden. It looks organic and super chic, and it won’t cost you a thing!
“A good tip to make sure the party can continue even when the weather gets colder is to drape blankets or scarves over the seats before guests arrive. I’m currently obsessed with these gorgeous wispy throws from Johanna Howard Home.
“I tend to favor natural textures when it comes to exterior decorating, but cutlery is definitely a place where you can add a little flair. Usually, I put all the cutlery in a nice cup in the middle of the table and let everyone take what they need.
“Linen is my first choice for an outdoor gathering. It’s comfortable, effortless, and looks even better when it’s not in a perfect rush (for who honestly, who has the time?). You can also easily throw everything in the washing machine after the party is over. Sweet July’s Merritt collection is my go-to, especially the beautiful alabaster color that goes with everything!
