Suffolk Libraries celebrate Black History Month with online and in-person events

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Ahead of Black History Month, Suffolk Public Libraries has announced plans for a series of in-person and virtual events to celebrate Black History .

Black History Month programs at the Suffolk Public Library will begin February 1 and run through the end of the month. Each event is free and open to the public.

Event organizers say the events will not only talk about black history, but also highlight black history in the making. They will also focus on celebrating Black joy, expression, achievements and current events that are shaping the world.

The following events are currently scheduled:

  • February 7: Family Food Fun Online Course (for families)
    • Time: 4 p.m.
    • Get a Virtual2Go kit to make Soul Food Collards together.
  • February 16: Ask an athlete (for teenagers)
    • Time: 6 p.m.
    • Learn about music, how to create their own art inspired by black history, and get to know local athletes.
  • February 17: Local Black History with authors VM Roberts and Jeanice Thomas (for adults)
    • Time: 6 p.m. | Morgan Memorial Library Assembly Hall
    • Discuss the rich culture and history of the area.
  • February 19: Black and Super (for families)
    • Time: 10 a.m. | Morgan Memorial Library Assembly Hall
  • February 26: Our History: A Celebration of Black History Month
    • Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. | North Suffolk Library
    • It will be a day full of rich culture expressed through various mediums such as oral storytelling performances and percussion to name a few. There will also be music, dancing and vendors.
  • February 28: News Conference
    • Time: 6 p.m. | North Suffolk Library Adult Room
    • Special guest speakers such as delegate Clinton Jenkins, Domenick Epps, co-founder and co-owner of the Wall Street Cafe, Tony Jones representing Virginia Organizing and local author, poet and teacher Sylvia Bond.
